free hand lettering practice sheets: months of the year
Hand lettering takes practice. A lot of practice. In my new pursuit to teach myself hand lettering, I’ve created hand lettering practice sheets for myself. I find hand lettering to be a hobby I can do in the margins of my day as I chase my twin toddlers and preschooler around. That’s why I love to create hand lettering practice sheets.
hand lettering in five minutes a day
Give me five minutes and I will grab my Tombow dual tip brush pens and practice when I can. THe only advice I have in hand lettering is practice, practice, practice. I practice hand lettering nearly every day. Granted it may only be five minutes, but still, I practice.
Thankfully hand lettering is like riding a bike. Each time I come back and practice a particular word, phrase or quote, I am shocked to find I’ve improved. Even if I only practiced five minutes the day before!
So, take heart, my friend. Whether you are a busy mama trying to find something to do for “you time” or a college student looking for a way to blow off creative steam. Hand lettering is something you can achieve with just five minutes of practice each day.
hand lettering is good for the soul
As I evolve in my design, I find that I love to push myself to try new things. While I”m proficient at wielding a mouse and creating digital products, I struggle with hand-drawn and hand lettering elements. Because of this, I’ve been diving into the world of learning hand lettering and brush scripts. While I don’t have a lot of spare time for hobbies these days I have discovered how relaxing and almost meditative it is to sit and do hand lettering.
Because my hand lettering is currently a work in progress, I have a lot of work to do, I love creating fun quotes or letters with various fonts. Since it’s almost a new year, I thought I’d create a months of the year hand lettering practice sheet. This way I can put my new found skills to use in my bullet journaling for the next year.
These practice sheets are perfect for printing off and tracing each month of the year. Whether you want to use them for your own journaling or for a craft project, it’s an easy way to write beautifully.
hand lettering supplies list
For this particular project, hand lettering each month of the year, here is a list of supplies I suggest using as you practice. Eventually you can use the pens you practice with to create your hand-lettering creation!
While you can use just about anything to practice your hand lettering, I prefer to use colorful brush lettering pens. That is currently my preference, it could change. That said, I have several tools I use when I hand letter through my day. Some of these supplies I keep in my kitchen drawer and pull out while my kiddos are napping and I’m working on dinner.
Other of these supplies I keep in my home office desk or bedroom bedside table. That way when I have a few minutes and have a craving to do something crafting, I can grab a set of tools and hand letter for a few moments.
The basic supplies include paper, pencil and pens. However, you may be looking for something a bit more specific ๐ so below are what I have in my various hand lettering stash packs around my house.

how to use your free hand lettering worksheets
First make sure you have your printer scale set to “fit to page.” Once your have your sheets printed you will want to grab a few blank sheets of printer paper. Place your blank sheets OVER your hand lettering worksheet and begin to trace and practice.
Remember to start slow, and take your time. Key notes to keep in mind as you practice is to use the lightest pressure you can on the upstrokes and a heavier pressure on the down strokes. Don’t forget to lift your pen between each stroke. And just continue to practice.
It’s easy to want to rush to trace and copy, but your writing muscle memory will grow stronger as you practice slowly and carefully. As you get the hang of each stroke and letter you can then start to speed up a little. Even still, hand lettering is not a fast affair, it’s all about slowing down!
